Melchior July 14th

Hello all!

For those of you who don't know, I will be filling in for Jonathan Groff on the 14th of July when he takes his first personal day. Because Groff has never missed a show and I will be the first person to go on for Melchior other than him, this is a landmark here at Spring Awakening. I am over the moon with excitement.

It’s hard for me to even begin to describe what performing at the Tonys is like. I jumped in at the very end of our Medley for the “Totally Fucked” portion of the song and got to jump around a bit…with 5,000 people intently watching. When we planted our feet and screemed “Blah…” at the top of our lungs, the collective rush we all felt was enough to make all of the stress, the struggle, and the utter insanity of the Tonys seem like the greatest part of the job.

No matter what happens with my career I will never again experience what I experienced that night. Winning best musical and being involved with something this huge, and this revolutionary, just doesn’t happen every day.

The performance after the Tonys was thrilling as well. As Skylar put it, “It was like homecoming. We went away and won the World Series, and this was our first performance where the fans could welcome us home.” I had the fortune of being able to go on for Hanschen that night. When we walked out onto the stage the audience completely erupted. Our theatre has never heard that kind of applause. Lea got up on her chair and just stood there, patiently waiting for the screaming to die down so she could begin her song. Another magical moment was when John Gallagher Jr stood up to say his first line, the audience applauded for a good minute. Finally, we have an entrance applause for him! Well deserved, if you ask me.

So the reason it’s taken me so long to update my blog…not a lot of time. We just finished 16 performance straight and yesterday was our first day off. We’re all a bit tired so I have been getting more stage time than normal. Which is wonderful. I’ll be back in the habit of writing now that our schedule has returned to normalcy.

There are a lot of exciting things coming up this summer. For now we are all still reeling in the fact that we actually won the award for best musical. Things are already changing around our theatre…the show is becoming something so much greater than us now, it’s a bit overwhelming. One step at a time…it will be interesting to figure out what the next step of the process actually is for all of us.

Tony Week

I don't even know how to describe how floored I am that I am involved with the Tony Awards this year. The mix of emotions I am feeling right now...it's incredible. To think that I was dropped into this cast a few months ago, and now have the honor of joining them the night of June 10th, is all a bit much.

The stress everyone in our cast is feeling right now is overwhelming...but...in a weird way, it's good stress. We're all extremely excited. This will be an interesting week to get through. Emotions are high and anticipation is driving everyone a bit nuts. I think it's a very fortunate thing that this cast is such a tight-knit family. It would be very difficult to get through this week without supporting each other the way we do.

In other news, I was recently cast as Hugo in an upcoming reading of Bye Bye Birdie that Roundabout Theatre Company is doing...But more on that as the reading draws closer...right now...It's just one day at a time.

We're entering the final push. We have only 8 more performances until the tony awards are announced in front of us at the Radio City Music Hall. It's simply baffling to think about.
